Twilight: Los Angeles

Twilight: Los Angeles demonstrates the roots of racism. As you consider the actions that took place during the riots, take a look for ways that your community institutions and society may perpetuate the problem. Consider whether all neighborhoods are served equally. Schools: Which neighborhoods have well-equipped schools? What are ways to improve this situation?

  1. Even though the events of twilight toOk place in the 80's, society today still struggle with the same issues today. Racism is still very evident in today's society, even though we try to believe that it is not present. Racism may not be as blatant today as it was back then, but it is shown in very subtle ways. For instance in society, with dealing with the police or just people in our everyday life we experience racism. If the cops are called into certain communities, that is considered as "the hood" it takes a longer time for them to arrive at a scence versus if they were called to a upper class community. In that case there is definatly a sign of inequality. Even in schools, public schools in a prominent community have better resources than schools that are located in a lower class community. schools in upper class community seem to have better teachers, better resources and they seem to get much better opertunities than those in lower class communities.

In order to fix problems like these, I think that people need to start to pay attention to the bigger picture of a particular situation. Society need to learn how to forget about color and class an set out to do their job better, in order to protect and serve communities better. In my opinion, when it is something as important as dealing with children and education there should be no favorites each and everyone of them should be treated equally and not by where they live or come from.

  2. Racists are people who believe that innate, inherited characteristics biologically determine human behavior. They are alive and well today just turn on your tv. Every community has good bad and ugly. Its the balance the changes the school and community around. Good parents get involved, and money helps. Who to work in a bad area or live for that matter. Get involved in you community, your local school. Its up to everyone to work together to make a difference. Money is not the answer community is.

  3. I agree with Andrew and also the fact the fact that racism occurs in everybody. As for the for the community in Los Angeles the streets the streets over there are probably a little bit more banged up than other communities due to gangs littering and robbing places. The schools there are probably corrupted with all the gangsters messing up the good school system they had going. To improve these situations everyone needs to work together to settle everyone down and control the situation or if that's not possible police officials should get involved to make sure it's safe.

  4. As much as we don't like racism it still occurs. There is only so much a community or institution can do to prohibit or stop it. I know from experience all neighborhoods and schools are not served equally. I went to a school in Coral Springs and to school in miami. The difference in education, books, and appearance was significantly diffenrent. It all goes back to funding and community outlook because some schools get more money than other because of property tax. The better your area the higher the tax and this money is used for the schools in your district. Schools in a high tax disrict are usually better than schools in worse areas. It goes back to the government and there is almost nothing we can do about that except make people aware of whats going on.

  5. There is no way in hell that all neighborhoods are served equally. You would have to be out of your mind to think this. Ghetto neighborhoods dont get nearly the law enforcement that they deserve and rich neighborhoods like Lighthouse pointe are equipped enough to stop an army. Its not fair but tax payers money does dictate alot of it. It will probably never stop, but one way to help is to have more community watch programs.
