Five Elements of Design

Using the five elements of design (line, mass, composition, texture, and color) evaluate this set design.

  1. This stage has ornate detail with bright color and wonderful movement. It looks like its old and has a feel and look of Europe, or India. The wood brings the audience in and makes it quite homey. The couch is bright and seems to be a focal point of the play. Their is a wonderful balance to the stage windows on the right and left, and the weight in the center where the action happens. I think this is a Thrust stag as it protrudes into the audience, though it could be a Proscenium stage its hard to tell.

  2. For “line” I see all three of them: vertical, horizontal, diagonal. There is no mass in the set but I would say that the characters would mainly stay in the sofa because is where is more bright. I think that the set has a good balance, everything looks to be on their exactly place, that makes it look balance on both sides. The sofa has a strong color so it gets our attention, so that must be the mains focus of the play. I can feel the texture of everything, the wood, sofa, chairs, windows, walls, etc..

  4. For this set design I see lines going horizontal, vertical, and even diagonal. For the mass I didn't really see much except for the sofa being isolated from the rest of the furniture. The texture in this set design, shows us a more modern day look with the wooden stairs and wooden kitchen table. The color sets a blissful display a day of happiness with the pink rug and pink couch in the middle of the set showing us bright luminous colors.

  5. The lines in this set are made by many different objects. I see horizontal, vertical and even diagonal lines that are formed by the stairs.
For the mass I would say the middle, it's more pack than any other space on the set.
The texture is more of a "woody" texture and I can feel the couch being a "hard fabric" kind of texture.
The color to me is Vy old fashion like. It's soft but yet very...vintage. If that makes any sense.

  6. There are all three types of lines present in this scene, there is vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. I believe that there is an even distribution of mass throughout the scene. However, i tink that a greater portion of the mass is in the centre of the scene where the couch is located.

The composition also seems to b evenly distributed throughout the entire set. I can feel the soft texture of the couch and the wood from the stair case and the walls, also the smooth wooded feeling of the floor. The setting seems to be an old english setting, with the bright colors. the play probly has something to do with comedy because comedy always has bright and happy colors. The color of the couch is not really dominant but it does stand out from the rest of the set.

  7. There are many vertical and horizontal lines, i notice however more vertical lines. The mass is directly in the center and the composition makes your focus center stage. I feel the clouds outside, the sofa, the wooden ceiling, and the color red is predominent in the center with the pillows. The color green is used alot which is nature
