Medea: Playwright’s Purpose

“Medea” is a very controversial tragedy. Written by the Greek playwright Euripides, what is the primary purpose of the play? Is the purpose important or meaningful today? How so?

  3. I would think that the purpose of this play would be to entertain the audience. Which is still meaningful today; if the viewers aren't entertained they won't want to see your play or any others that you write.

  4. The primary purpose of Madea is to tell a story and yet still capture an audience.

  5. Medea is very short yet compact play. Its primary objective is to show the underlying power of a woman’s scorn. There are many major themes displayed throughout the play such as betrayal and rage, the position of women, revenge, pride, the supernatural, and cleverness.
Betrayal and Rage: Medea who is the main character of this play, has been betrayed by her husband Jason, whom she gave up a lot for and because of this she becomes a very outraged woman. Her violent and unbalanced heart, formerly devoted to Jason, is currently set on his destruction. The Greeks were very interested in the extremes of emotion and the consequences of leaving emotion unchecked; they also tended to see rage as part of a parcel of greatness.
Revenge: The seductive appeal of revenge is part of the play's enduring popularity. Medea is willing to sacrifice everything to make her revenge perfect. She murders her own children, paradoxically, to protect them from the counter-revenge of her enemies; she also kills them to hurt Jason, although in slaying them she is dooming herself to a life of remorse and grief. But part of Medea's appeal is its power as a revenge fantasy; just like Medea, all have at one time or another had been beset by enemies whose power is institutionally protected and unfair. And like Medea, we have fantasized about the satisfaction of a perfect revenge. Like the Chorus, we watch Medea with a mixture of horror and excitement.
As not to get into too much details, this play can been seen in this present day, however its not only women that seek revenge or feel betrayed or raged but both male and female. Even though back then, women had no say in their lives, in today’s society they do , so its not as bad as it was for Medea.

  7. The primary purpose of the play Medea is that one should never give scorn enemies another day. The purpose is important because you will learn to never banish your enemies from your life and to make things better with your enemies or it will hit you hard in the future with consequences you will pay for.

  8. In my opinion i believe that the primary purpose of the play was to show that men believe that they are free to do whatever they please without suffering the consequences of their actions. And the revenge that Madea took against Jason and is bride was to teach him a lesson that it's not okay to abandon his family.
The purpose of the play is very useful today, because divorce is rates are higher than they have every been.Women today still have problems with men thinking that they are free to do whatever they please when they are in are in a relationship.Men today believe that it is okay to cheat on thier wives or girlfriends. The only difference between modern men and ancient greek men is that men today cheat quietly, and in ancient greece it was ok for them to do it openly.

  9. Medea's play purpose is, besides entertaining, showing us the nature of human feelings. Good and evil are part of life, and it is us who choose what to do and how to live. Even though Medea was betrayed; she had the opportunity to forgive and continue living or, play such horrible revenge!

  10. Medea is a very interesting play that shows us that the "more things change, the more they stay the same"..With the high number of divorce in society today, it shows that relationships were not much different back in the ancient times...the man or woman in the relationship who is scorned often is so hurt they are driven to the point of no return.

  11. Don't know how i missed this one?
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn. This is an important play as it shows us the length to witch some people will go for love. And yes it is still important today. Every generation it seems its getting easier to betray the ones we love. I for one think this trend need to stop. It is the most drastic measures Medea takes but in the end see is happy knowing her ex is miserable. Sorry for the rushed response and the delay ?? don't know how i missed it.

  12. The play Madea is about a wife that is done wrong by her husband when he leaves her stranded and alone. The purpose was somewhat to show how woman had no power and that karma is alive and well. It is meaningful because karma still exists today, however woman have way more rights and power then they did at that time.
